Middle school is an exciting time of growth and change. Students are becoming more independent, discovering their interests, developing friendships, and learning to take greater ownership of their education. While they may seem more independent, parental support and involvement are still incredibly important during these years.
Here are a few ways parents can help their middle school student have a successful year:
- Stay connected. Continue asking about your child's school day, friends, classes, and activities. Even when they don't always want to talk, knowing that you are interested and available makes a difference.
- Encourage independence. Middle school students need opportunities to manage their own assignments, materials, schedules, and responsibilities. Offer guidance without always doing things for them. Learning to solve problems independently is an important part of growing up.
- Establish good routines. Consistent bedtimes, healthy meals, designated homework time, and limited distractions can help students come to school ready to learn.
- Monitor academics without taking over. Know what classes your child is taking and check grades and assignments regularly. Encourage your child to communicate with teachers and ask for help when needed.
- Make attendance a priority. Regular attendance is essential. Missing school can make it difficult for students to keep up academically and remain connected socially.
- Talk about friendships and choices. Middle school students face new social pressures. Talk openly about kindness, respect, decision-making, social media, and choosing friends who encourage them to make good choices.
- Encourage effort and perseverance. Success isn't always about getting the highest grade. Praise your child's effort, improvement, responsibility, and willingness to keep working when something is difficult.
- Partner with the school. If you have a concern, communicate with your child's teachers or school staff. When parents and educators work together, students receive a consistent message that their education matters.
Most importantly, remind your child that you believe in them. Middle school can come with challenges, but it is also a tremendous opportunity for students to discover who they are and who they want to become.
We are excited about the year ahead and look forward to partnering with you. Together, we can help our students become confident, responsible, respectful, and successful young people.
