Dear Keys Cougar Families,

Recently, the Oklahoma Legislature passed Senate Bill 1481, requiring elementary students to receive 40 minutes of recess each school day. Following the passage of the law, the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) issued guidance stating that, for the 2026-2027 school year, 20 minutes of the required recess cannot be counted toward the state's required instructional hours.

While our students have always enjoyed recess as an important part of the school day, this new interpretation means school districts across Oklahoma must adjust their schedules to remain in compliance with state instructional time requirements.

After carefully reviewing several options, Keys Public Schools has determined that the least disruptive solution is to add 10 minutes to the beginning of the school day and 10 minutes to the end of the school day. This approach allows us to meet state requirements while minimizing changes to classroom schedules and preserving instructional opportunities for students.

Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, our school day will be:
School Begins: 7:50 a.m.
School Ends: 3:10 p.m.

We understand that any change in daily schedules can affect family routines, and we wanted to provide this information as early as possible so families have time to plan. We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we work to meet state requirements while continuing to provide an excellent educational experience for our students.

Thank you for your continued support of Keys Public Schools. We look forward to welcoming our students back for another outstanding school year.

As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to take a moment to personally thank the incredible teachers and para educators at Keys Elementary.

Moving into my new role as Superintendent has been an exciting step, but I’d be lying if I said I won’t deeply miss being in the building with you every day. The relationships, the teamwork, and most importantly the impact you make on our students—it’s something truly special, and something I’ll always value.

Please know this: I may not be in the building each day, but I’m still "just down the hill." I’m still here to support you, cheer you on, and advocate for the important work you do. You are the heart of Keys Elementary. You show up for kids in ways that go far beyond academics, and our school is better because of each of you.

I also want to acknowledge our high school teachers, who I will soon have the privilege of working more closely with—I’m excited to support you and recognize the impact you make every day. Thank you for your dedication, your passion, and the difference you make every single day.
